Glenstone/James River improvement project wrapping up before Thanksgiving

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As part of the $12 million Glenstone Avenue Widening Project, a cost-sharing project between the Missouri Department of Transportation-Southwest District, Greene County and the City of Springfield, one of the worst roads in one of the most heavily traveled areas of Springfield is about to get a lot smoother, says Co-Interim Director of Public Works Kirk Juranas.

Glenstone Terrace, the road just east of Glenstone that provides access to Chick-fil-a, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and other businesses, is now under City maintenance as a result of the project.

“The South Glenstone project has been a collaborative effort to improve safety and reduce congestion for drivers seeking access to many retail shopping locations. We appreciate the cooperation of businesses and the patience of drivers as these improvements were made,” Juranas says.

The widening project adds an additional lane in each direction on Glenstone Avenue between Battlefield Road and James River Freeway and adds dual right-turn lanes from the westbound James River Freeway offramp to northbound Glenstone Avenue. It also modifies three intersections.

“Republic Court on the west side of Glenstone Avenue becomes a right-in/right-out entrance and the traffic signal will be removed. Access to Glenstone Terrace (the east outer road) at Peele Street is closed and relocated to the north at Luster Avenue,” Juranas says.

Independence Street becomes a four-legged intersection. Republic Road on the east side of Glenstone Avenue is now rerouted along Luster Avenue to Independence Street. Traffic signals will be added over the next few weeks.

Juranas encourages drivers to slow down and pay extra attention as the signals are added.

“This work is expected to be complete before Thanksgiving and should ease traffic congestion in the area significantly,” he added.
